This was moving weekend for our son and daughter-in-law, so Jan and I headed for Audubon on Saturday morning to help out. We followed the IAIS route (once the Rock Island) along old highway 6. At 9:00 at Van Meter, we found a westbound standing on the mainline waiting for a warrant to go on toward Council Bluffs. The train was a solid block of brand-new IAIS covered hoppers, numbered in the 7000s and 7100s. On the head end of the train were IAIS 601, 466 (still in ICG paint), and 626. They were following a couple of UP detours, UP 7064W and UP 2414W. Also in the neighborhood was the regular eastbound run behind IAIS 800.
We stopped for lunch on our way home Sunday at Stuart and caught a UP detour, headed by UP 8043 and 8252. This westbound train had 106 empty UP coal hoppers. We traveled on east along the old highway, and soon caught up with an eastbound IAIS freight of 24 cars. It was standing at the east end of the Booneville siding, behind IAIS 604, 403 and 628.
