Jan and I decided to try to intercept a special train on the IAIS moving an ex-CNW crane, No. 251, across our state. Starting at 7:00 in the morning, we used the scanner to keep track of the warrants it received as it made its very slow trip toward us. We left Indianola shortly after 2:00 p.m. and met the crane train just east of Booneville around 2:40.
The train consisted of IAIS diesel 600, IAIS car 9075, the crane CNW 251, and CGW X3795. After getting a couple of pictures as the train rolled along beside the highway, we went out to Short Line Junction in Des Moines to train-watch and await the special train.
They finally made Short Line at 4:20 and passed through the yard on track four. As we drove home, we learned from the radio that the crew had just an hour left to work as they left Short Line. The crane train tied up on the oil track at Altoona at 5:30 and Cimarron was called to take the crew back to Council Bluffs.
